Rosacea is a chronic skin condition causing redness on the face, commonly affecting the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. It is more common in women and usually appears between the ages of 30 and 50. You may be at risk of rosacea if you have a family history or are fair-skinned but it can affect patients of all skin colors.
Rosacea can present with different types. Some patients just have redness or flushing. Others have acne like outbreaks as well. Still others can develop thickened skin, especially of the nose, after repeated bouts of inflammation. Finally some patients will experience ocular rosacea, in which the rosacea involves the eyelids, leading to itchy water and red eyes, often with a foreign body sensation in the eyes.
At Lumos Dermatology®, a team of board-certified dermatologists will determine your particular type of rosacea through a comprehensive consultation, which may include a review of your symptoms and medical history, and a skin evaluation. Additional diagnostic tests may also be requested to rule out other causes.
Treatment for rosacea may involve a combination of healthy skin care habits and medical treatments, tailored to each type. The team may first identify triggers, such as temperature changes or certain foods, and recommend daily sunblock use and proper skin care to minimize breakouts. In case of a flare-up, a personalized medical treatment plan may be developed, including topical medication and laser therapy.
